Welcome!

If you're like us, your dogs are cherished family members that deserve the best. When you can't be home for them because of work or other obligations, you want them taken care of with the same love and attention you give them yourself. That's exactly what we do at Highwood Hounds. Because we love dogs!
Highwood Hounds Doggie Dayhome is located in a quiet cul-de-sac in the Northwest community of Highwood in Calgary, Alberta and offers a multitude of services for your toy and small breed dog(s).
We offer:
- A fun and safe place to stay! Any time, day or night...if you're looking for full-time, part-time or on-call daycare, we're available every day of the week...even if you're a shiftworker. Our home and yard is safe and dog friendly and there is almost no place on the property that's off-limits and so exploring is fun. Every dog in our home is treated like our own, whether they need one-on-one or quiet time, a special diet or medication, shampooing or brushing. Of course, lots and lots of playtime and cuddles are the norm! We make sure their every need is met!
- Exercise and Socialization! A tired, well-exercised dog is a well-behaved dog. Daycare generally reduces normal but unwanted canine behaviors such as chewing, barking and digging out of boredom. You will pick up a manageable dog at the end of daycare. Your frustration with a wound-up dog is relieved and you can spend relaxed time enjoying your best friend.
- Walkies! 30 to 60-minute walks and/or playtime romps at a variety of off-leash parks in the community.
- Rest time. Some dogs simply will not stop and will become tired and cranky (and less tolerant of others) unless they have a nap. Like child daycare facilities, we encourage structured naptimes throughout the day (usually after our morning walks). We provide a variety of comfortable and quiet areas where dogs can take stress-free breaks, thus calming dogs down and curbing many unwanted behaviors.
- Very high human to dog ratio. As a licensed dayhome, we are limited to seven small dogs in total (five guests plus our own two). This means we can provide excellent human supervision and strive to manage dogs using positive reinforcement methods.
- A mixture of males and females. Spats tend to occur between dogs close in status (age, size, and sex) or a persistent lower-ranking dog who is constantly testing a higher-ranking dog for position and will not back down when corrected. Scuffles and fights are very rare at Highwood Hounds because we have a healthy mix of dogs every day.
- A variety of ages. Our playgroups range in age from 5 month olds to well-socialized and fair older, higher-ranking dogs. These older dogs are needed to dole out corrections when necessary and do a much better job of effectively and appropriately correcting than any human can!

About Our Use of the Term "Guardian"
We at Highwood Hounds embrace the term "Guardian" instead of owner when referring to our animal companions. More than an exercise in semantics, this shift promotes a more compassionate relationship between person and animal: by changing the language that we use to define our relationship with animals, we help to shift people's perspectives away from thinking about animals as mere property, objects and things. By thinking, speaking and acting as Guardians, we recognize that animals are individuals with feelings, needs and interests of their own. Although the term does not change any legal standing, Guardian connotes the responsibility we have for the care, welfare, treatment and quality of life of an animal in our charge. We join thousands of other compassionate people who are vowing to use the word "Guardian" rather than the term "owner".
